Third-placed Brechin were held to a goalless draw by lowly Arbroath in a disappointing derby match that failed to hit the heights.
Brechin were first to threaten after 12 minutes when Rory McAllister's header was saved by Darren Hill.
Marc McCulloch went close for Arbroath midway through the first half with an effort which had to be tipped over by Craig Nelson.
A fierce drive from McAllister was well saved by Hill shortly before the break.
Both sides kept plugging away but the closest either side came to a goal in the second half was in the 58th minute when Steven Hislop had a shot well-saved by the legs of Nelson.
