Second best - but some late signs of life

Ass they say in most blues songs "Well I woke up this morning, and was feeling downnnnn'' . well it was an Arbroath home game

A warm but breezy afternoon at Gayfield. Recent showing meant a very low crowd - 479 - which included a few visitors

We started with a reshuffled side. Rattray, Lunan, Sellars, McCulloch and McCaffrey (loan signing) all started. We had Scott and Hislop up front. However some questions about whether the returnees were fully fit but they showed up well.

Playing against the wind, Peterhead looked sharper. We didn't surrender midfield but found it difficult to get hold of the ball while they worked some nice moves which petered out in our 18 yard box. McCulloch was showing up well, winning virtually every ball in the air against a bigger opponent.

Only two real chances of note first half. First when Sellars hot a 30 yard free kick over, then a nice break down the left saw Scott curl in a lovely ball in fornt of goal but no-one could connect. A quite ridiculous booking 2 minutes before halftime when Scott lunged at a ball being shepherded out and was then booked - presumably for diving but refs never give it. Shocker

Peterhead won many corners first half as a sign of their territorial dominance. It looked like we might hold out when, on the stroke of halftime, Peterhead broke down the left and although Hill made a great point-blank save from Ross it came out and we went 0-1 down

Second half Lichtie fans were in depressed mode. The team looked like they expected worse to come - confidence seems low. It should have been worse. Peterhead had plety possession and carved us open a few times but were either very wasteful with the finishing or, on a couple of occasions, we relied on fantastic saves from Hill to keep up in the game.

Hislop as working his socks off as usual but P'heid's defence was sound. Rennie, Flyer came on for Rattray, Doris respectively and then at the end, Milne for Lunan.

The changes helped and, just asthe home fans ad lost all hope, we started to get the bit between our teeth with a bit more possession in the middle and Scott and Hislop finding space. we carved out two great chances - Scott's nearpost header unable to beat their keeper. Then when Lunan put Hislop clear through, the ball got tangled under his feet.

Until then a 0-4 scoreline might have been a more accurate reflection but, in the end we could well have scrambled a point or more.

Overall another poor showing and we were still overrun a few times... but there may be some light at the end of this current tunnels
