Simon Murray squandered several chances before scoring the only goal to keep Arbroath top of the table.

And assistant manager Todd Lumsden admitted the frontman – who lashed home after 74 minutes to sink Elgin only to be booked for his celebrations – left him cursing at times. Lumsden said: “He can be frustrating. He does the unbelievable things with ease and the easy things he doesn’t.”

Elgin boss Barry Wilson said: “We had the better chances in the first half. We rode our luck at times and Arbroath caused us a lot of problems at the back.”
