Breakthrough at Forthbank: a deserved win at last

Last updated : 15 November 2008 By Fargone
Arbroath claimed their first league win since the opening day of the season with a 2-0 win at Stirling. Bishop started leftback, Doris in midfield on the left with Sellars returning after suspension

Martin Grehan missed Stirling's best chance when his shot was well saved by Arbroath keeper Darren Hill.

Arbroath took the lead after 53 minutes when Steven Dorris set up Bryan Scott, who cut inside to fire a low shot into the net from the edge of the box.

And the Lichties sealed the victory 10 minutes later when Barry Sellars was left unmarked to head home from six yards. Sellars came close to extending Arbroath's advantage late on, but headed just wide of the target.

Stirling huffed and puffed but, with a few near-scares, didn't really cause our rearguard great concern. After some early errors, Rattray came onot a good game and Campbell was also a rock in the middle.

Only one point behind Stranraer - can we build on this?

Some Fans Views from P&B:

Arbroath....

Mel Hutchright: Best to cast a veil over the first half, as it was dreadful fare from two poor sides.

However, the second half was as good as we've been for a fair while and I don't think there can be much debate that we deserved the three points. Doris made a couple of great runs, one of which led to our opening goal, and looks an impressive temporary acquisition. It really does make a Hell of a difference having Scott back in the side, and hopefully we can extend McGowan's loan deal as they look as if they could form a handy partnership.

Probably wise not getting too carried away, as Stirling do look a poor side, but it's a blessed relief to get a win at long last. With a clean sheet to boot.

XBL: Sorry, but yes Stirling are shocking. I was sceptical, but you are indeed as bad as you say you are. I can't really add much else.

Now, the first half was a case of two pish teams being pish. I recognised the tactics, because it was the same way we played last season. "Pragmatic" football. It was a case of stop Stirling and then see what we could get. It only went and bloody worked!

Our defence, despite a couple ropey moments, held out, and we played some long ball to cut straight through the woeful Stirling defence. It was really good to see, plus kudos to the away fans. The away stand was a nice place to be today, so a good day all round! More later.

Albion....

StewartyMac:
Embarrassing again today. It wouldn't be so bad if we were losing to good sides, but the quality of the teams beating us is woeful which makes it all the worse. Considering the 'quality' of players we have this season, then ,,this is the worst I've saw in 30 years of watching the team.

Gnash: Awful. Terrible. Sh*te. And that was just the referee.
I have never seen a Stirling side as bad as the one I'm watching at the moment. Allan Moore, please go - now.
