Ayr on the rise

Ayr United crept closer towards the top-half of the Scottish Division Two table with a 2-0 win over Arbroath.

Darian Mackinnon put Ayr ahead in the 16th minute with a close-range header.

Arbroath were given a lifeline on 73 minutes with a penalty but Steven Doris could not convert, leaving Michael Moffat to score for Ayr in stoppage time and secure the victory.

Kyle McAusland ensured a positive start for the home side when he floated in a cross from the right wing, Mackinnon heading into the bottom-left corner.

Daniel Rennie almost equalised with an overhead kick from the edge of the box before the break but sent it wide.

Ayr striker Mark Roberts conceded the penalty late on but Doris' shot was saved by the legs of keeper Alistair Brown.

And Moffat made Arbroath pay, finding the net from 12 yards to give Ayr their fourth home win.
