Berwick's title challenge stepped up a gear with a well-merited win which brought Arbroath's five-match unbeaten run to an end.

Kevin Haynes gave the visitors a perfect start with a brilliant goal after just seven minutes. The big striker collected a Sean Paliczka pass on the edge of the penalty box and sent a beautifully-weighted shot high into the net beyond the reach of Arbroath's Mark Peat.

Rangers went further ahead after 26 minutes when the Arbroath defence failed to clear a Kevin McLeish corner. The ball broke to Gordon Connelly, whose shot was deflected into the path of Robert Horn who turned and fired low into the net from seven yards.

Arbroath battled back into the game in the second period, and Ian Dobbins came close with a header which Ian Little cleared off the line.

Then Jay Stein looked sure to score for the home side, but man-of-the-match Horn popped up to hook the ball away.

"We got a heavy beating the last time we were here," said Berwick boss John Coughlan. "So it's good to get a win. It was a very scrappy second half, but we defended well and had a couple of chances to make the win more emphatic.

"We are still in the fight for the title, but there's a lot of football to be played yet."

Arbroath manager John McGlashan was furious with his side's performance. He said: "I want to apologise to the fans for what was an abject performance, especially in the first half. I don't mind losing if the players give 100 per cent, but we didn't get that today.

"We need to redeem ourselves in our next game against Montrose on Tuesday night."
