Another Late Call-Off for NO Reason Whatsoever

Last updated : 22 December 2007 By Fargone

A perfect afternoon for football ruined by the referee. I walked onto the Gayfield turf - there was NO sign of frost, certainly not in either goalmouth which I checked or anywhere else. The temperature was 5 degrees. The turf was slightly soft and yielding - ideal for a game. It was a cool bright day with a very light breeze - a perfect afternoon for football.

As one of many fans, both home and away, who made a long return trip to Gayfield this afternoon, the decision of the referee to postpone the game at late notice was a complete fiasco. This was cancelled less than an hour before kick-off - it didn't even feature on the Radio Scotland list of postponements announced at 2.00pm. Apparently both sides had pleaded with the referee to allow the game to go ahead. When he arbitrarily cancelled it, both went on to ado a short strenuous training condition on the open space near the ground,

I cannot find out the refs name - I'll add this later. Was it Holdsworth from Dundee? It was suggested he was behind with Xmas shopping and wanted to use the 2 extra hours. It wasn't even that cold

Trouble, expense and inconvenience count as nothing to these officials. Can football continue in winter months with this type of attitude?
