ARBROATH defeated neighbours Montrose for the first time in five attempts with a convincing win against their great rivals in the Third Division on Saturday.

Gayfield player-manager Paul Sheerin capped a fine display by scoring his side’s fourth goal as Arbroath took the honours.

“We worked hard throughout and deserved the victory,” said former Don Sheerin, whose side gained revenge after its recent Scottish Cup defeat by Montrose.

“We played really well in the first half and deserved our lead. After the second goal we showed a real appetite and our confidence was given a real boost.

“We passed the ball well and looked very good in forward areas. It has been a good spell for us and the win was very satisfying.”
