The Scottish Football Association confirmed on Monday that referees do not have the authority to call games off due to high winds, even when extreme weather threatens to render the contest farcical.

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall argued that the conditions should be considered before a match is allowed to proceed following his side’s goalless draw against Dundee United at Fir Park .

That contest was ruined by swirling winds and McCall believes that referee Iain Brines should have ordered a postponement.
