The fans seem to losing their nerve (positive support has been less in evidence in recent seasons) but opinion is divided on whether change would achieve anything

Rout brings Cairney's resignation

Harry Cairney resigned as manager of ARBROATH on Saturday evening after watching his side lose 3-0 to COWDENBEATH at Gayfield.

"Harry just felt that it was not going to turn round for him and it was best if he just stepped aside," revealed Lichties committee member Malcolm Fairweather yesterday."Results this season have not been what we expected and Harry's resignation was accepted. "It was very amicable. He just felt it was the right thing to do.

"I think the players have to take some responsibility, too, because they have not performed on the park."Harry did well when he came in and we nearly avoided relegation but somehow it has not worked out this season." Fairweather said that, although in no rush to appoint a successor, the club hope the right man is found sooner rather than later.

"Stuart Sorbie (Cairney's number two) has agreed to take the team in the meantime," he continued."I wouldn't expect any announcement this week, but you never know. "Whoever comes in will have to work with the same guys because the transfer window is now closed."

Cowdenbeath barely broke sweat in disposing of the Lichties, who mustered just two attempts on goal during the entire match. A clearance by Jamie Bishop fell kindly to Liam Buchanan in the 28th minute and he drilled the ball low past Mark Peat from just outside the area.

Former Lichties captain Innes Ritchie added a second with a header from a 39th minute corner before Arbroath were reduced to 10 men with the ordering off of young debutant Nicky Smith.

The Blue Brazil made it three and easy with 10 minutes to go when Robert Downs was given time to pick out striker Ryan McCallum at the far post.

Cowden boss Miksu Paatelainen was delighted to see his charges make it two wins on the trot—five goals scored and none conceded. "It was a well-deserved win, the attitude was fantastic," he enthused."To score three goals away from home is always very pleasing. "Our defence is very solid, which gives the team a healthy foundation."
