Arbroath gave their survival hopes a shot in the arm with victory over play-off contenders Stranraer .

Player-boss Paul Sheerinnetted a killer fourth direct from a corner to add to an Alan Cook double and a Paul McManus opener as the home side closed the gap on second-bottom East Fife to four points.

Sheerin said: “I’ve never scored direct from a corner but the most important thing was the result.

“It was a great win for us. It gives us hope because East Fife lost. But the reality is we could win all our games and still be doomed if East Fife do the same.”
