Six goals were shared on Tuesday night in the Forfarshire Cup final at Gayfield, with Forfar Athletic triumphing over Arbroath 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.
Both sides fielded a mixture of first team and fringe players in what was an entertaining game.
Arbroath took the lead with their first attack, Andrew Munro sending Jamie Reid’s second minute corner past Jason King.
Forfar looked to get back into the game and had chances through Martyn Fotheringham and Kerr Hay but it was Lewis Allan who grabbed the equaliser.
Allan chased a ball into the box and was brought down by Callum Brodie, the loanee taking the spot kick himself and firing past Brodie.
Six minutes later Forfar were in front; a Fotheringham corner wasn’t dealt with allowing Hay to blast home.
Calls for offside were denied as Hay looked to have been played onside by Joao Victoria.
It was equal again on the stroke of half time when Kane Hester reacted quickly to a loose ball to stroke it past King.
It didn’t take long after the break for Forfar to go ahead again though when a Gavin Swankie cross looked to have been dealt with by Brodie but the young keeper fumbled the ball, and Chris Templeman fired home from three yards out.
Both sides went close to scoring again but it was Arbroath who got the goal they needed to take the game to penalties in the 72nd minute, David Gold curling home from 20 yards.
Swankie had a great chance to win it for Forfar but his shot was weak and Brodie easily smothered.
The game went straight to penalties at full time.
Forfar’s Danny Denholm went first and sent his kick wide with Munro converting his effort.
The following penalties were all netted to make it 4-4 with Jamie Clarke able to win it for the hosts, but it wasn’t to be with Jason King saving his shot well.
It went to sudden death and with Forfar scoring their penalty it was down to Kieran McWalter to keep Arbroath in it.
The midfielder stepped up to take it but could only blast his effort over the bar, giving Forfar the win and the trophy.
