Hegarty looks to build on good performance

From the Montrose Review:  Gable Endies gaffer Paul Hegarty is pleased with the improvement he’s seeing in his players’ performances from game to game.

But the Mo manager said the side has to start winning games ahead of this weekend’s crunch derby clash at home to fierce rivals Arbroath.

Montrose tasted defeat in Saturday’s trip to Berwick Rangers and Hegarty was disappointed with the manner of the goals his side lost in the 2-1 loss.

He said: “We started off well, the first 20 minutes we were fine and had a couple of chances.

“Then they got a goal out of nothing, it’s a cheap goal from our point of view. We managed to get an equaliser from a penalty and Paul Watson’s done well to slot it away.

“In the second half we had the better chances but again, we lost a really poor goal. That was two balls into the box and our defenders couldn’t deal with them, and we were punished.

“We came away with no points and we were looking for at least one. The goals we lost were cheap.

“The positive to take though is that we played some nice football and we created more chances than we have over the last couple of games.

“I see an improvement over the last few games even though we’re not winning, but it’d be great if we did start winning because we need to get in about the points.

“It would have been really good to get three points going into Saturday.

“The ones that haven’t been here maybe you need to tell them how important the derby game is. But we won’t need to say too much ahead of a game against our local rivals.

“It’ll be a game hopefully we’ll relish and one we can come away from with three points. The teams are all tight so there’s very little between the teams.

“We’ve trained at Links Park and we’d have a friendly there but it’s good for everyone involved that we’ve got a home game at last.

“We’ve got Arbroath at home and then Clyde so they’re two tough games.

“We’ve been on the road for quite a bit and to get back on the home pitch is very good. It’s a new surface so there’s no excuses for anybody.”
