AYR keeper Ally Brown saved a Steven Doris penalty to help the Honest Men claim three points.

AYR player-boss Mark Roberts paid tribute to his No.1 between the sticks for bailing him out as the Honest Men made it four wins from five.

Roberts brought down Lee Sibanda inside the box with a clumsy challenge less than 20 minutes from full-time.

But Ally Brown denied Steven Doris to preserve a slender single goal lead that Michael Moffat doubled late on.

Roberts said: “Ally got me out of jail with the penalty save. I’m not having talk of a forward’s tackle.

“I got my toe to the ball first but the boys aren’t believing me. It looked like a stonewaller. It was backs to the wall for a while and we were hanging on but Moff sealed it with a great finish.”

United raced ahead in 16 minutes when Darian Mackinnon was left all alone at the back post to nod home a Kyle McAusland delivery. Teenager Robbie Crawford failed to add a second from six yards out as Arbroath upped their game in the second-half.

Doris was unable to convert from 12 yards before Red Lichties substitute Darren Gribben rattled the bar.

Austin McCann then scrambled a last minute Doris effort off the line, leaving Ayr to take full advanatge of gaps at the back as Moffat rounded keeper Tony Bullock on the halfway line before firing into the empty net.

Arbroath player-boss Paul Sheerin said: “It was a proverbial game of two halves.

“We were pushing for an equaliser and always likely to lose a second goal. Overall a draw would have been fair.”
