News of Arbroath's demise are greatly exaggerated. A determined and energetic showing blew Brechin away and we were unlucky to win only 4-2 (going on 8). Everyone played their part. And the decent turnout of away fans - still keeping the faith - appreciated this rare event, a win!
From the Arbroath Herald: Arbroath had the better start of the two sides, capitalising on a mistimed challenge by Gerry McLauchlan in the 7th minute which allowed Bobby Linn to skip past the defender and slot home from just inside the box to give the visitors the lead.
City suffered an injure blow in the 22nd minute, when Ryan Ferguson had to come on to replace Ewan Moyes.
Just seconds after the substitution City found themselves two nil down, after a slip from S. Jackson allowed Arbroath to go on the attack, and it was Linn on hand to slot home from just inside the box.
City were forced in to another change in the 32nd minute, when injury forced Jonny Brown off, with Allan Walker replacing him.
Brechin made their final substitute at half-time, with Alan Trouten replacing Garry Kenneth as the homeside looked to get back into the match.
However, despite this change it was the visitors who netted first in the second half, with Michael Travis heading home from close range to make it 3-0 to the Lichties in the 53rd minute.
City did pull a goal back just minutes later, with the club’s top goal scorer, Andy Jackson, prodding home from close range.
The goal spurred the homesters on, and Robert Thomson headed home a Craig Molloy cross in the 61st minute to narrow the gap to 2-3.
City’s celebrations were short lived however, as Arbroath pulled themselves further in front three minutes later, through a Paul McManus goal.
Despite some good passing play by City, they never created any clear cut chances, and Arbroath retained their two goal advantage to secure a vital three points for the Lichties.
