Super Lichties upset the odds to get off to a flyer

The Chinese State Circus was in town but the real acrobatics were at Gayfield where Arbroath picked themselves up from last weekend's disappointment to put in a forceful and disciplined performance.

Alloa shaded possession but never really came that close. We were a little fortunate to take an early lead when Rattray was on the spot to convert a loose ball in the 6 yard box after Alloa failed to clear a free-kick

Alloa had the upper hand before another controlled break saw a great cross into the box for Sellars to rise above the defender to head a great goal.

Then around 40 minutes Gates skinned their full back out left to fire a great ball in for Scott to convert. Unbelievable.

Alloa were out early for the second half and came back into the game within 10 minutes with a well struck freekick from 25 yards.

It looked like we'd be pushed to hang on but, after being on the back foot, we got a grip again for the last 15 minutes and came close a couple of time. Then Scott was fouled in attack and a wuickly taken free kick released Reilly to slot the ball past their keeper.

A great afternoon's work. Alloa had looked OK on the ball but never really carved out that much. After gloomy predictions this was a good start
